Finding a new fragrance is often like dating--there’s a lot of “No, they’re great; a total catch! Just not for me,” and abstract notions of whether it feels right.

It’s a fickle business.

I personally suffer from fragrance indecision all the time at Sephora, which makes me a nightmare for all the ladies who work there.

Consequently, when I saw the Commodity Goods Fitting Kit, I thought two things:

It’s a fantastic idea.

I must have it.

Commodity Goods is an LA based company offering premium perfumes and colognes with two main collections--black ("complex; intense"), and white ("simple; airy"). Their mascot is Eau de Bear, a "scent sommelier" which also happens to be a giant brown bear. It's weird/adorable/terrifying.

They put a lot of focus on creating "scent cocktails" in which you essentially layer different items in their range together. Not exactly the first people to do this (I believe Fresh were big advocates of layering scents), but it works well for their products.

How it works: for $24, you get 10 samples of the entire Commodity Goods fragrance range. In the comfort of your own home and to the annoyance of your housemates, you can spray all the fragrances you want and contemplate them as long as you like. The Fitting Kit also comes with a little card that lets you write notes about your thoughts on all the fragrances. When you finally decide which fragrance is your favorite, you can receive one rollerball of your choice free of charge.

They also have the “Trio” package in which you can receive three rollerballs, and the “100” package in which you get a full-sized bottle of the perfume.

Got it? Good! Let’s dive in.

As I’ve gone through all the fragrances, it’s become clear to me that not all of the fragrances agree with me (the words “watery bathroom cleaner” and “damp alley” have made their way onto my notes). However, I actually think this is a good thing. This is precisely what the kit is great for--letting you sample everything and finding out what you like and don’t like.

Let's talk about the ones I did like:

Moss (black collection): This one was a surprise favorite for me. Forest and "nature" scents tend to trigger memories of camping or gin for me, so I avoid them as a general rule. However, this is the very best of fresh outdoor scents. Although fairly sharp initially, it mellows out over time and wears well--a beautiful scent.

Rain (white collection): Rain is a sporty scent, which reminds me of a more mature Burberry Brit Sheer. A calming scent which smells a bit like fresh laundry. Unlike a lot of the other Commodity scents, there isn't a lot of spicy notes which makes it a little easier to wear.

Gold (white collection): From what I can see on Instagram and blogs, Gold is one of the most popular Commodity Fragrances, and I can see why. Although it's strong upon initial application (I have "grandma" written here), it dries down into a warm vanilla scent with a hint of grass notes. I know I know, that sounds gross. If it helps, imagine someone wearing the best vanilla fragrance while walking in a green meadow. Just trust me--it's good.

Now, I have only tried the scents alone. However, it is highly recommended that you take advantage of having all the scents at your disposable, and try different combinations. (I've heard Mimosa and Gold go beautifully together.)

Overall, a great buy if you're a big fan of fragrances and having choices. You get to spend time with scents outside of your comfort zone, and get a free Commodity item which are just insanely beautiful to look at. Win-win.

The thing about The Face Shop is that even when you go in knowing that you only need 1 thing (like a cleanser), you end up leaving with about twice as much stuff. Or in my case, 4 times as much stuff.

The Face Shop: Rice Water Bright Cleansing Foam

I have been using this cleanser (far right in the above photo) since high school, largely because it has the same price point as many other cleansers you find in the drugstore, but it looks better and smells prettier. The products smells faintly of sweet rice, and is a sticky cream where “a little goes a long way” is the rule of thumb.

It promises to brighten your face, and I am honestly not the best person to say whether or not that is true. I mainly use this cleanser at night, while I use the Korres Milk Protein cleanser in the morning.

The Face Shop: Natural Sun Oil-Cut Sun Cream

I had used this before and honestly didn’t think it was very special. Yes, it kept me matte all day and blocked the sun, but it was hard to work into the skin and left a white cast if not properly applied. It wasn’t my favorite thing to apply in the morning, shall we say.

However, it wasn’t until I switched sunscreens and found my face an oil spill by noon that I realized how well this sunscreen worked with my skin.

It is pricier than your run-of-the-mill sunscreen, but the ability to throw it on and let it provide the same magic of a primer and sunscreen without a problem is well worth the money.

The Face Shop: Nail Polish Top Coats

I am going to be completely honest here, and that I can’t even differentiate the differences between these two top coats. They’re fine. Not great.

(I miss Seche Vite.)

And of course in true Asian beauty fashion, the nice ladies at The Face Shop threw in a bunch of samples with my purchase. I have actually used 2 of these items before (the Chia Seed moisturize and the CC cream) to great success in the past, so it’s nice to have these old favorites in my life again, albeit in a smaller sample pack-sized capacity.odd lookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05560596427897732216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8265838636668711344.post-20915626704542768442015-03-07T10:15:00.000-08:002015-03-15T14:31:29.858-07:00Jill Stuart: Mix Blush Compact in Sunny Holiday Review

This blush quad by Jill Stuart has been a long coveted item for me, ever since it was released years ago on what seemed to be every single Japanese beauty magazine .
I find it odd that a lot of reviews of foundations don’t include information on whether the product transfers or not. Regardless of how flawlessly applied, if a foundation transfers onto your sunglasses/shirt/friend’s shirt/etc, everyone will know that you're wearing foundation.

Luckily, this SPF-laden liquid foundation from Shiseido does a great job of adhering to your face and not leaving little marks on everything that touches your face.
The Shiseido UV Protective Liquid Foundation is a highly pigmented yet watery formula similar to Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua. The product comes with its own foundation sponge housed in a matching blue box, and the sponge applies the foundation beautifully. In the States, the foundation comes with SPF 42, is available in 8 different shades, and retails for ~$36 USD. The particular one I have and will be reviewing is shade SP10 Light Beige.
How to apply: Shake the dickens out of it. Apply a small amount (I usually aim for a shallow puddle the size of a nickel) to the back of your hand and apply to face with fingers, brush, or a sponge. The foundation hovers between medium to high coverage, and only the strongest of skin pigmentation continues to show through the foundation.
Thoughts

Pros: Right off the bat, this is one of the best foundations I’ve used. It feels great on the skin, is easy to blend, and feels almost invisible following application. This bad boy lasts forever--I have worn this foundation on nights out where I don’t always get the chance to touch up and it looks almost exactly the same. This. Does. Not. Budge. In line with the not budging thing, this foundation doesn’t transfer (much) once it has been set on the face.

Furthermore, my skin has reacted well to it. Normally if I wear BB creams or foundations, my sensitive & acne-prone skin needs to take a few days to recover and may develop a few spots. With the Shiseido foundation, my skin is perfectly fine given that it is cleansed properly.

It provides a lot of coverage and SPF, making it great for spring and summer although I’ve been wearing it in cool and warm weather alike.

Cons: It can definitely emphasize dryness or flakiness in the skin. I highly, highly encourage users to exfoliate and/or moisturize before applying this foundation. If you have chronically dry or flaky skin, I would advise you to get a sample or tester of this foundation before making the investment.

Another drawback is the limited range of colors. The colors are fine for this blanched and yellow-toned lady, but for many others finding the correct shade might be a struggle.

Lastly, blending can be a struggle depending on what you use to apply it. I personally find a dense rounded brush (I use the Sonia Kashuk 121) or a sponge to have the easiest and most flawless result. A soft, sparse foundation brush is not your friend in this situation.

Although definitely pricey compared to drugstore foundations, I think the longevity and results offered by the foundation are well worth it.odd lookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05560596427897732216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8265838636668711344.post-7303580034080506862014-05-19T21:34:00.002-07:002014-05-20T01:10:59.916-07:00European Wax Center - The Exfoliate Review

On the bright side however, you do get a lot of product (2oz) housed in a sleek and sturdy container. The website claims that it is comprised of fruit enzymes, vitamins, antioxidants, etc. etc. They claim it can be used all over the body and face, although I won't be able to comment on how it works on anywhere else on the body besides the face.
When you open it, the first thing you'll get is this incredible fruity smell; not in that sick sour candy way, but in a light and juicy fruity way. (The only other thing I'm irrationally weak for besides packaging is scent.) Inside, the product is a gel-like consistency which is sticky to the touch. There are no visible microbeads or other physical exfoliants; just the smooth gel and its fruity enzymes. How to use it according to the store attendant:

On dry skin, apply a thin layer to the face

Wait 1 whole minute for the gel to "activate"; it will tingle a bit on the skin

Rub the gel in circular motions, and eventually the dead skin will begin to be sloughed off

Rinse and dry

Pretty simple. For me, it worked exactly as advertised. A lot of other products claim to exfoliate the skin, but often the "dead skin" that comes off is just the product pilling up--this doesn't seem to be the case with this product. When my skin is super smooth and freshly exfoliated, either with this product or other products, I really struggle to get any dead skin clumps, which is a pleasant indicator that this product does what it advertises.

After using it, my skin is stupidly smooth and polished. It also doesn't feel too dry, although I would still highly recommend following with a moisturizer. odd lookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05560596427897732216noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8265838636668711344.post-61077982182264558682014-04-15T10:07:00.000-07:002014-05-20T01:11:17.883-07:00It's Skin - Babyface Waterproof Eyeliner & Natural Eyebrow Review

I got the pencil in color "01" or "True Black." This eyeliner is a soft pencil, this is a twist up that requires no sharpening. The pencil is about 3-4mm across, and fits perfectly in the eye for tightlining. I used it exclusively for filling in my lash line and it has performed admirably on my oily eyelids. However, if you don't want raccoon eyes you have to use a light hand with this eyeliner. If you use the thinnest layers of pencil you can get away with, it'll look great hours later; if you go over your lash line over and over again, it'll come off and smudge. Be careful!

Overall, for $4-5 it's not bad. Compared to Rimmel Scandaleyes eyeliner, it's less creamy and has far better staying power. I'm happy with it, but I'm probably not going to repurchase.

The pencil is shaped like an elongated triangle, and reminds me of the Shu Uemura carved eyebrow pencils. The color of it is spot on for those with black hair; it's a very natural grey-black shade. Unfortunately, the control of this is not very good despite its great shape. It is very difficult to achieve a defined line, which I personally prefer. This pencil seems to be best applied for a soft haze of color, and filling in any gaps. The color lasts for a long time with or without gel, and I never worry about re-applying once it's on my face.

Overall, these are great little products which are very cute to have on your table. They do have their flaws (not completely waterproof, they are prone to picking up crud from the rest of your makeup bag) but they are well worth the price tag.

When Bath and Body Works has their 2-for-$22 sale on their beastly 3-wick candles, it is hard to walk out empty handed. These 2 candles are the 14.5oz 3-wick candles from their City Collection, and normally retail for $22.50 each.

Besides the fact that I have very fond memories of the two cities these candles are named after, these candles have a fun little design on their lids (which isn't common on the regular run-of-the-mill B&BW candle) and they look beautiful on your bedside. Their designs also make some sleek storage containers which I'll show a little later.

Onto the review!

London Calling

"Tea and Lemon: A royal blend to send your senses across the pond."

First off, the smell doesn't evoke London at all. The sweet lemon smell is very similar to Lipton iced tea, and trust me--there aint nobody in London drinking that.

So does it smell like London? No. However, the description is apt. Tea? Check. Lemon? Check. The bright and sugary lemon smell blends in very well with the earthy Earl Grey-esque notes, and starts to adopt pleasant somewhat "grassy" notes after burning for a while. This is a perfect spring scent in my opinion, and a pretty unique scent as far as candles go. I think lemon scents can cross the line into the "household cleaning products" arena fairly quickly, but this one does a good job of staying away from that.

The throw and strength of this candle is very good; I lit the candle upstairs in my room, and within 10 minutes I could smell it downstairs. I lit it last night, and the scent still lingered well into the next night.

Paris Daydream

"City of Love: A blend of watery notes, moss and mandarin."

This scent is divine. As others have noted on the B&BW site, this scent is more unisex and significantly less cloyingly sweet like many other candles are. It is an extremely clean smell that is the love child between fresh laundry and the cologne department of Nordstrom. Compared to the scent of London Calling, it is more "romantic" and carries more warmth and depth which would make it perfect in winter as well as spring.

Paris Daydream does not have quite the same longevity as London Calling, but it fills my bedroom nicely and lasts for a few hours after being extinguished. This one would have to be my favorite out of the two. ♥
I wasn't always a big fan of candles, but I've grown to love them. They add a lot of je ne sais quoi to a room, making rooms more welcoming and inviting even when they aren't lit at that exact moment. Whenever my candles run out, I miss having the soft glow and scents wafting in my room, and my addiction starts anew.

What made my ridiculous attachment to candles a little more palatable was the fact that the candle jars made for gnarly containers after they were finished.

Here is one of my old Mahogany and Teakwood candle jars, which I have used to hold my bracelets, rings, and other miscellaneous jewelry. They are more organized like this, and certainly look better in there than in a plate or tossed on my desk.
